Four Day Externship in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

with EFT trainer Jill Fischer, LICSW

The Externship in EFT is the basic four-day training in Emotionally Focused Therapy and a pre-requisite for all other trainings as well as for certification. It includes an overview of all aspects of the model including steps and stages, interventions, adult attachment theory, and application of EFT with couples and families.

The Externship material is taught using lecture, interactive discussions, role plays, video demonstrations and live session consultations.

Who Should Attend?
The Externship is recommended for all types of mental health clinicians who counsel couples. This training is specifically focused on the use of EFT with couples.

Brief Objectives:
Externship participants learn how to view relationship distress from an attachment perspective, help partners reprocess the emotional experiences that led to their relationship distress, help couples create new bonding events, and work with clinical impasses.  Participants will learn the steps and stages of the model, interventions most commonly used, and how to work with each couple's underlying interactional pattern.

Participants are strongly encouraged to read the basic handbook of EFT by Sue Johnson, EdD, The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connections (2004) , prior to the Externship.

Important relationships in our lives evoke strong emotions, both positive and negative. It is not uncommon for a therapist who hears about negative emotions dominating a love relationship, whether in the context of couple or individual therapy, to conclude that this is an indicator that the couple no longer loves one another or that the relationship isn’t viable. This is rarely the case.

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), with its grounding in an understanding of adult attachment, offers a radically different perspective. An evidence-based approach with a proven effectiveness rate, EFT provides the therapist with a way of understanding relationship distress and a way to work with it that is of tremendous value. This one-day workshop will introduce the basic theory of EFT and describe the EFT road map for how to move a couple from relationship distress to a secure bond.

Addressing Addiction, Fostering Attachment
with Emotionally Focused Therapy - Northampton, MA

With EFT Trainer Micheal Barnett, LPC

  • November 3 & 4, 2017 • Friday & Saturday, 9-5 12 CEU’s

Smith College Conference Center 51 College Lane Northampton, MA

This two-day workshop is an advanced master class in Emotionally Focused Therapy designed to inform how addictive processes (chemical dependency as well as other non-chemical or process addictions) impact attachment bonds and how clinicians can successfully work with these couples and families.

So often in clinical work, we run across addictive processes that impact clients’ ability to connect and establish secure attachment. We now have the tools to integrate an attachment-based focus in addressing addictions so that a new positive cycle can be created in couples and families to support sobriety, growth and healing.

Participants will:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of how addictions can be seen through the lens of attachment
  • Assess whether EFT can be beneficial in the face of active addiction
  • Learn to assess and address both active addictive process and well as past addictive process
  • Learn effective tools to address addiction and increase attachment security with EFT
