Four Day Externship in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

with EFT trainer Jill Fischer, LICSW

The Externship in EFT is the basic four-day training in Emotionally Focused Therapy and a pre-requisite for all other trainings as well as for certification. It includes an overview of all aspects of the model including steps and stages, interventions, adult attachment theory, and application of EFT with couples and families.

The Externship material is taught using lecture, interactive discussions, role plays, video demonstrations and live session consultations.

Who Should Attend?
The Externship is recommended for all types of mental health clinicians who counsel couples. This training is specifically focused on the use of EFT with couples.

Brief Objectives:
Externship participants learn how to view relationship distress from an attachment perspective, help partners reprocess the emotional experiences that led to their relationship distress, help couples create new bonding events, and work with clinical impasses.  Participants will learn the steps and stages of the model, interventions most commonly used, and how to work with each couple's underlying interactional pattern.

Participants are strongly encouraged to read the basic handbook of EFT by Sue Johnson, EdD, The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connections (2004) , prior to the Externship.

George Faller - Emotionally Focused Therapy: Cracking the Code of Love in Couples and Families

July 9-13, 2018

Emotionally Focused Therapy, developed by Dr. Susan Johnson over the past 25 years, is one of the most empirically validated models of couples therapy in the world.  Focusing on identifying repetitive negative patterns of interaction and replacing them with positive cycles of responsiveness, EFT provides a simple and powerful mechanism for change.

This course will expand the concepts of EFT to families and introduce exciting new ideas from George's book Sacred Stress. Participants will learn to apply the language of attachment to effect change with their most challenging relationships and stressful events. Making extensive use of videotapes, role plays, and experiential exercises, participants will both see and practice the skills of EFT, a model that is getting worldwide attention for its ability to create the safe haven and secure base that are emblematic of loving and durable relationships.

This course includes both didactic instruction and experiential approaches, mirroring the model itself, which help clients both understand their stuck places and have a new, corrective experience in the therapy room.
